Art vs. Commercialism, round 1,675,098

I *hate* moving. My fiance and I are in the process of relocating for the summer. It’s amazing how much crap accumulates during the course of a school year.

When we git outta here tomorrow morning, we’re going to commence drivin’ cross country. Consequently, I probably won’t be a font of great political posts.

Instead, I’m chewing on art versus commercialism this morning. Nick Mamatas posts today, wondering whether writers do themselves a disservice by focusing on the social, commercial, and networky aspects of the field. He’s “beginning to wonder if being a busy blogger and con-hopping and online-workshopping and all that other stuff actually slows one’s rate of learning how to write a story.”

I’d imagine this sort of debate is generalizable to other artistic fields. It seems like there are a bunch of artists hanging out ’round here — even an SF writer or two. So what do you all think?
