No, no, this isn’t a rerun post. Back in February, I posted that Mandolin (under her meatworld name Rachel Swirsky) and Nojojojo (under her meatworld name N.K. Jemisin) each wrote stories that were nominated for Nebulas.
Now I’m very excited to say they’ve each been nominated for a Hugo award, as well. (Hugos are the other major award for writers of fantasy and science fiction.)
So huge congratulations to Nojojojo for her short story “Non-Zero Probabilities,” which has been nominated for both a Hugo and a Nebula this year.
And equally huge congratulations to Mandolin for her novelette “Eros, Philia, Agape,” which has been nominated for a Hugo. (Her Nebula nomination was for a different novelette, “A Memory of Wind.”)
You both rock!

Wow, that’s incredibly awesome! Of all the places I didn’t expect to run into Hugo award nominees.
Hey Mandolin, out of curiosity, how on Earth does one submit to Tor.com? I’ve explored the site pretty thoroughly and haven’t found anything there to tell me, though a friend forwarded me an SFWA thread that provided an editor’s email address.

I know how important those are for a damn good reason: When i’ve been in a serious hurry with no time to peruse the shelves, if there’s a hugo or nebula award winner I’ll grab it and run.
Er.. what do the hugo and nebula awards actually look like? Bookends? Spaceships? ALiens?

Wow. Very cool. I’m a long time lurker and have read N.K. Jemisin’s The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms and absolutely loved it, which is rare for me with new fantasy.
Somehow, it escaped me that Mandolin was Rachel Swirsky. Now, off to see if I can download some more new fiction.

If I may offer some relevant reading matter, Yonmei @ FeministSF has been posting about all-male shortlists at the Hugos and other SF awards. She proposed a rules amendment to counter this:
The motion was dismissed without debate. But, it sparked off a blogging effort to encourage more women to do exactly what men do – nominate people of their own gender for Hugos – and we can feel encouraged by the eventual result, namely that (as Yonmei outlines in her latest post) there is a better female representation in the Hugo nominations this year than there has been in the past, and – unlike every year in the last decade – there are no all-male writing shortlists, and only one all-male shortlist overall (Best Professional Artist).
Here’s hoping it’s not a blip, and that we see more female winners too. <3
