Dinner with cartoonists

Posted by Ampersand | June 3rd, 2003

So I had dinner with some cartoonists last night - Erika, Jenn, Kevin, Kip, and Scott, as well as Claire, who is not a cartoonist (that she mentioned) but seemed like a lovely person. I’m pleased to report that cartoonists, as a class, are entirely able to sucessfuly use utensils and eat a meal in public without embarassment to themselves or the surrounding diners.

Anyway, it was a lovely time. No one in the world talks about comics better than Scott does, so any chance to hang out with him is always a pleasure. Erika handed out a minicomic of some of her webcomics, and also had some of her originals with her to show. My favorite was Gender. I showed folks a few of my political cartoons, and got gratifyingly nice reactions, and Scott showed us his new (and not yet released) online comic “The Right Number,” which inspired awe. And he talked about his plans for how to sell the comic, which are - amazingly - even more exciting than the comic itself. But I think I’m sworn to secrecy on that point, so y’all will just have to wait to hear more about that.

In her livejournal description of the evening (which includes photos!), Erika says that a lot of the conversation went over her head. I felt exactly the same way - while I’ve been concentrating on my weekly political strip, there’s apparently been a whole webcomics revolution that’s rapidly passing me by. It was “Vera” this and “Jen” that and “Bill” the other and “sketchblog” as well, and I was like, “who are these people?”

And Scott drew a diagram on the tablecloth (Erika’s livejournal has a photo), which I may talk more about in a later post.

It was pretty swell. We’ll have to do it again sometime.
