ah, good ol' dutchess co., where I spent a good part of the last decade. If time allows, you should 1) visit Vassar's art museum, and 2) hop the river to New Paltz for lunch at the Main St. Bistro, ancient Dutch houses, and beautiful hiking in Minnewaska State Park (at least, you should if you like veggieburgers slathered in stuff, old houses, and the outdoors).

Anyone see Kucinich on the Daily Show?

Not that great, but I guess it's hard. John could have helped him out a little more. sigh.

I'm curious to read an Ampersand or Bean take on Susan Estrich's column today

It reminded me of the "Coya, come home" campaign that destroyed the career of Minnesota's first woman representative to Congress. What's particularly appalling is Susan Estrich claims the feminist label -- and not like those pseudo-feminists who only claim to be feminist in order to accuse women of lying over rape, buying into victimology and so on.

There's things to criticize Huffington for -- and those are included in the column, but saying she is a bad mother for running for office? It makes me want to stand in the middle of Pioneer Courthouse Square and SCREAM!

Hey Amp,

I used to live in Dutchess Co. in the obscure hamlet of Poughquag (which sounds like it belongs in a Herman Melville novel.) Am now a few miles further north in Hudson, NY. Stop by and say howdy at 512 Warren St.

Catchy new title, Amp, but I think the bitter end has come and gone. The judge threw out the Fox case, and expressed a series of rather quotable opinions in so doing. For instance: "There are hard cases, and there are easy cases. This is an easy case."
The verdict struck me as fair and balanced.

Kija, I agree with you; that editorial was offensively sexist. No one in the world would ever suggest that a father should let his career decisions be dictated by his children; nor do I really think that Estrich would be willing to quit her column and law career if her kids demanded it. And it is particularly disturbing coming from Estrich, who is, as you say, a real feminist. (Estrich's book Real Rape is excellent, imo).

But I think it may also come from the theory of political thinking which says that any candidate who doesn't have much chance of winning must only be running out of ego. The piece reads as if Estrich has let her dislike of Huffington overcome her best judgement.

Thanks for the invite, Peter. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll have the chance to drop by this trip.

MDtoMN, I caught it and was disappointed... DK was stiff, unfunny and didn't even make a good case for his candidacy. Sigh....

John, the title wasn't yet moot when I put it in place a week ago. :-p

[jaw drop]

Would anyone else like to join me in giving today's Giant Slap With A Norwegian Fish (Monty Python style) to Susan "With Friends Like These, Feminism Needs No Enemies" Estrich ?

[shakes head] Estrich calls Huffington's followers "shallow" ? She should take a look in the fucking mirror sometime...
