MTV’s Marriage Rights Commericals

Posted by Ampersand | October 20th, 2004

Andrew Sullivan is probably right to say that these MTV ads for equal marriage rights won’t have much impact - since the youthful MTV-watching crowd is probably overwhelmingly for same-sex marriage already.

But still, the commercials were loads of fun to watch. “Threats” and “permission” were my favorites. You should probably skip the first one if you’re squicked by piercings, however.

OH MY… Permissions was my dead on favorite. It EXACTLY portrays how it feels sometimes.

    Wow… great ad.

Actually, if you like music and want to stay in the mainstream post college, you watch MTV regardless of political affiliation. Until there’s an alternative that doesn’t bash conservatives and blindly favor liberal candidates, it’s all we have. MTV and the pop/rock music scene in general do a marvelous job of brainwashing youth into thinking that you are not a nice person if you are conservative and you are a wonderful, supercool person (regardless of how little you contribute to society) if you talk about it alot and vote democrat. Very smart, really. As people start families they begin shooting off from this. But some cling.

It would be one thing if these rocker-types could speak intelligently about the matter (and some other place where we’re not paying them to perform), but cheap shots have become so rampant and inane that I will not go to concerts during an election year ever again. Yep, I’m talking to you, Jeff Tweedy. And you, DBT. And probably you, Guster (according to your website).

Sorry, it’d be great with me if all entertainment-types shut their mouths about politics.

    Asking once was hard enough
I’m not an MTV fan at all, but they did good with their spots about same-sex marriage. “Permission” is particularly good.

Wow, the MTV I catch glimpses of is all Real Road World Rules Bam’s Mom Kicks Him Out of the House or some such crap. Jen, when is the political stuff on? I wouldn’t mind watching that.

Good for MTV. I don’t think all conservatives are meanies, just the people they elect into office. :)
