Portland Feminist Meetup

Posted by bean | January 13th, 2005

Considering the ever increasing popularity of meetup.com, I’m sure that I don’t have to spend much time explaining it. But, for those who are not aware of it, essentially it is a website where you can find groups to join in your city on just about any subject one could possibly think of. Like the Amelia Peabody books and live in Orlando? Join the Orlando area Amelia Peabody Meetup. Tired of dealing with bad customer service? Want to vent to like-minded people? Live in Dilli, India? No problem!! Join the Dilli Bad Customer Service Meetup Group.

So, that’s what meetup.com is all about. With that said, I’d like to invite any Portland area feminists to tonight’s feminist meetup which will be held at In Other Words bookstore (3734 SE Hawthorne) from 7 - 9 pm.

It would be best to sign up on meetup.com and RSVP. But, if you don’t want to or are unable to, don’t worry about it — just show up.

I have had a lot of problems with meetup. I wanted to organize a local group for non-custodial mothers, but they told me there was “insufficient” interest. Of course, this becomes a vicious circle. I can’t demonstrate sufficient interest when I’m not allowed to try, can I? So I had various other people email them asking for a group — no effect. I settled for expanding an existing “parents rights” group, while insisting in my description that while it was open to all parents, fathers rights extremists and men with histories of domestic violence were not welcome. So things are kind of slow for a while. And then I get some guy named Wayne Cook who comes along — a well-know Fathers Rights wingnut out of Canada who joins every meetup group there is related to fathers, mothers, children, etc. Including mine. Including gay dads in Beijing (boy, must be expensive getting to those meetings). Meetup has told me thus far that I can’t get rid of him, although I fear his presence will preclude a lot of battered women who are being threatened with custody problems from contacting the group (our local family court judge is famous for favoring batterers. She delivers for them — and why not? The Fathers Rights people financed and managed her campaign). Anyway, I’m ready to just dissolve all efforts to go through meetup. What good is it, when you can’t control your membership? How can you, say, organize a local anti-racist group, if Klan people from anywhere in the nation can join and you can’t do anything about it?

My name is Wayne Cook (referred to as “wingnut”) in this post.
I have read the comments by “Silverside”.
Too bad, this person never contacted me directly, with their concerns regarding Meetup .
    Dialouge is important!
But, to associate me with domestic violence is offensive, if not libelous.
