My former Philipino colleague being denied entrance to the U.S. for a job a the school where he got his Ph.D. for upwards of 8 months. A skilled worker with a job contract, a degree from a reputable U.S. institution, and application for a green card should not be held up for 8 months for a background investigation. My Malaysian coworker recently went back to visit his parents; he hopes he will not have difficulty reentering the country. Everyone I know knows a foreigner who has had difficulty getting back into the U.S. even after short trips abroad to "friendly" nations. Our research group works on developing new fuel cell, battery, and bone replacement materials. Under some proposed regulations, a background check and special visa could be required for our (many) foreign students to use basic equipment that is vital to our research and is not associated with building bombs or developing biological weapons.
