What Would The World Look Like If…

I wanted to share an interesting and thought provoking eye-opener about how the world might look if we represented it as 100 people. This idea was inspired by the writings of Donella Meadows, a woman who dedicated her activism to creating models of sustainability, and adapted into a web based mini-film by Allyson Lucca. Here’s a teaser excerpt:

If we could turn the population of the earth into a small community of 100 people, keeping the same proportions we have today, it would be something like this:

61 Asians
12 Europeans
14 Americans (from North and South America)
13 Africans
01 Australian (Oceania)

50 women
50 men

67 are not christian
33 are christian (Catholics, Protestants and Orthodox)

It’s definitely worth going to take a look at yourself.

    Thank you for sharing Kim. What a great tool for getting folks to start thinking of, “a bigger picture.” (Looking to see if we can get permission to teach with it.)

    Sadly, that is what the world looks like now, (No “if”) as big as it is; it is out of sight for most of us. Blessings.

    Neat idea. Adherents.com, though, makes the Christians 31%, not 33%.

    How about this further breakdown: of those 31 Christians, one will be Quaker, Witness, Latter-Day Saint or a Christian Scientist - don’t know which. You’ll have two Pentecostals and two from Indigenous African Sects.

    You’ll also have a Presbyterian, a Baptist, a Methodist, an Episcopalian and a Lutheran, with next to no Brethren, Mennonite, Amish, Adventist, Restorationis, Quaker, Latter-Day Saint or Witness.

    Finally you’ll have four Orthodox and seventeen Catholic.

    Apart from the Christians you’ll have 19 Muslims, 16 non-religious, 13 Hindus, 11 ‘traditional’ (African, Chinese and primal-indigenous) and 6 Buddhists

    That leaves 4 to divide between Sikh, Jewish, Jain, Shinto, Zoroastrianism and a few others. Neo-Pagan gets one sixty-sixth of a person.

    Someone asked about age: I can’t get detailed information, but http://gsociology.icaap.org/report/demsum.html suggests that 10 of your hundred would be over 60. http://www.un.org/esa/socdev/ageing/agewpop1.htm has graphs but no numbers, but it looks like:

    20-40 30
    40-60 20
    60+ 10
