Aaaaargh!

Posted by Ampersand | November 17th, 2005

Well, it’s clearly been doomed for a while, but it still pisses me off that Arrested Development - which, along with The Office (which I find so brilliantly humiliating that it’s actually very hard for me to watch) is the best current comedy on TV - has been cancelled.

For once, it’s hard to blame Fox - they did give it three seasons to find an audience, which is more than they do for most shows I like. It got written up all over the place by adoring critics. So why didn’t audiences start watching it? This person thinks that Arrested Development was just too smart for American audiences; this one blames baseball for chopping Fox’s broadcast season into chunks.

Firefly… Arrested Development… Dead Like Me… Wonderfalls… Sometimes I think that my liking a TV show is a kiss of death.

This really sucks. This was one of my favorite shows.

I wonder - if I keep scrolling down Alas, will I be the first commenter on every post? The advantages of returning home from business trips at 2 AM…

The only TV show I watch with any regularity is The Daily Show, but I have caught The Office a couple of times, and it really is brilliantly painful. One bit I saw had Gervais giving a motivational speech, and it was so much like experiences I’ve had watching someone deliver an embarrassingly bad sermon, where I’ve just wished I could leave but it would be seen as an insult. I actually changed the channel for a couple of minutes, and it felt like I was symbolically walking out on all the bad sermons I’ve had to sit through. It was the first time I’ve ever turned away from a TV show because it was so good.

(Note: None of the lame sermons came from my dad.)

Liked the first and last on your list, haven’t seen the middle two - worth looking for?

Hm. Never saw the show. What was it about?

Arrested Development will rise again. Take it from another Oscar, one of Oscar Bluth’s biggest fans and sorest rivals.

It failed because it was a stupid show. Leftists loved it because it validated their view of Republicans. The rest of the world yawned.

The Office is only good if you haven’t seen the British version. I watched an episode of the American version, and it seemed like everybody was trying way too hard.

Buffy did okay. So it can’t be you. :)

    Firefly… Arrested Development… Dead Like Me… Wonderfalls…

    Twin Peaks . . . Carnivale . . . American Gothic . . . Misfits of Science

    Sigh.

I’m old. I liked Frank’s Place, and remember Nichols, James Garner’s second series (before Rockford)? Great shows.

We bought the Wonderfalls DVD, BTW, and the shows they didn’t air are even better than the first 4 — a great show right up to the last shot.

Ooh, Freaks and Geeks. Good one. I’m adding that to my list.

A.D. was the smartest and funniest show on TV. You have to watch it a few times just to pick up everything that’s going on.

Well now I know who to blame for Firefly being cancelled. I saw the Brtitish version of the Ofice, was this the same show or a derivative?

Please don’t lke CSI. My dh finally found out where to download it from and I want my pleasure to last a few years.

AD was one of those shows I didn’t expect to like, but once I started watching it, I found that I couldn’t stop: the shows appealed to my sense of humour. I can see why some people would fail to find it funny, but I loved it.
