Nancy Pelosi On Being Sworn In As First Female Speaker Of The House
| January 5th, 2007
This is an historic moment - for the Congress, and for the women of this country. It is a moment for which we have waited more than 200 years. Never losing faith, we waited through the many years of struggle to achieve our rights. But women weren’t just waiting; women were working. Never losing faith, we worked to redeem the promise of America, that all men and women are created equal. For our daughters and granddaughters, today we have broken the marble ceiling.

Well, she won fair and square. Good for her. And the symbolism is good for women, especially young women thinking about what they’re going to do with their future.
I’ll hold my judgement until I see what she does before I decide whether it’s good for the country.

This is the first time I’ve felt hope in years. Go, Nancy! And here in Massachusetts, go Gov. Deval Patrick!

Clearly Nancy Pelosi is channeling Rosie the Riveter in that picture.
You should have pulled up the sleeve of that blazer, Pelosi! Show us the pythons.

Deval Patrick is a man to watch. Everyone’s excited by Sen. Barak Obama, but a Senator hasn’t been elected President since 1960. Almost all the people elected President since then have been Governors. Should Obama stumble (and I don’t count a little inhaling and snorting in high school as a stumble), His Excellency Deval Patrick may well step up.
