Who's to say that these guys, or at least the majority of them, aren't making this crap up? They're just trying to get people to feel sorry for them so they'll get released earlier.

Rape is a crime, no matter where it takes place. Rape in prison is a crime. Prisons are full of crime- assault, rape, theft, all the violent crimes. When prosecutors begin to prosecute inmates who commit crimes in prison, and prison rapists are given terms of years of solitary confinement, then prison rape will fall. Until then, prisons will be lawless terrritory.

In what possible world are *prison guard unions* the main people lobbying for increased incarceration?

The fantasy world in which unions are bad, yuck, icky and private corporations are pure and virginal.

(Card carrying union member ;) )

In what possible world are *prison guard unions* the main people lobbying for increased incarceration? Where they build the prison and who gets the contract may be mostly a function of special interest type lobbying, but harsh penalties for drug crimes and other things that swell the prison population are a result of politicians demagoguing to the vindictive masses.

Ok, so you eliminate the problem of guards' unions doing lobbying for more imprisonment.

Aren't you going to just make sure that corporations like CCA (Corrections Corporation of America, the nation's largest private prison concern) do the same lobbying but with more resources at their disposal? The privatization argument makes no sense from that perspective. None at all.

The idea that privatizing prisons will get rid of guard unions is weird. There are labor unions at private corporations.

Making it easier for prisoners to sue for any reason will insure that more lawsuits will be filed, regardless of how many crimes have occurred, or if any have indeed occurred.

The very idea that privatization is "libertarian" is bizzare. If the government is paying for what the government wants done then it is a government expenditure. Period. Whether the person doing the work is paid by the government directly or by a contractor would seem to be simply a matter of empirical efficiency. No one think the government needs to make all its own pencils and desktop computers, and no one thinks we should hire Halbutron to be the City Manager. Between those two extremes, I can think of no reason for ideology to trump empiricism in either direction.
