I can't really comment much about the NZ-specific parts, living on the other side of the world and all, but you make some really good points about people in general. It's so much easier to lob off the 'sexist' label on another group than to examine your own views; same with 'racist,' 'homophobe,' etc. It's always someone <i>else's</i> hate, I'm just making a little joke, where's your sense of humor? Prejudice (and for that matter, the obstinant certainty that "I'm" not prejudiced) isn't tied to class any more than it's tied to shoe size.
