I studied under her the summer before she died.

I didn't know her well -- she was already ill, so she didn't interact with us as much as other teachers -- but it was a setting in which first names were used, and I did spend time speaking to her, both privately and in a group. This was what I wrote after her death about the ambiguity of knowing her a little.

You can tell me if I'm being totally off here.

It seems odd to me that you refer to her by her first name. Generally that is a prerogative reserved for close friends. If you were her close friend, then I'm sorry to bring it up.

(My radar goes off when I see powerful women being referred to by their first names, where I feel men in the same position would be accorded last-name treatment only (e.g. Hillary vs. Obama).)

It blew my mind when I realized Butler had died and I had so little left to read for the first time from what she left behind. I hadn't heard of this story, though - had basically read everything listed on her wikipedia page and thought I was done, but looking now, I see that it and "The Book of Martha" were printed in a new edition of "Bloodchild and Other Stories" in 2005.

A lovely surprise. Thanks for the link. I envy me too, but more so I envy... everyone else who hasn't had the singular joy of reading the Patternmaster books, or Kindred, or the Parable duo or Xenogenesis trilogy or Fledgling or....

The one novel I haven't read is Survivor, since it wasn't in the Patternmaster compilation I (accidentally) stumbled on in the bookstore several years ago. Whether she liked it or not, I'm sure the time will come when I'll have to read it too. (After all, every writer has some sort of unruly child.)

Your link goes to the current page.

(I'm an Octavia Butler fan, too; I've read all of her novels that I could find, but not her short stories.)
