Joe, yes they are comparable. Centers don't call plays (hell, quarterbacks don't call their own plays anymore either), but they are at the center of the offense and like the catcher if they are off the whole offense is screwed up.

The center isn't comparable in importance to the catcher.

Roger said, "that you would attempt to promote this view by means of the racial composition of a defensive line is comical and myopic."

LOL! I think the fact that you did almost exactly what I said in the post is pretty damn funny myself. :)

Dylan,
First, I should say that there are teams that have fairly mixed lines, but these two teams didn't, and in most cases the offensive line is whiter than the defensive line. The argument I've heard is that offensive linemen "protect the quarterback" which affords them a little more prestige. This is especially true for the center, who is not only directly in front of the quarterback, but is responsible for snapping the ball, which is central to the timing of the whole offense (kinda like the catcher in baseball). Plus, the offense in football generally gets much more attention.

In most sports where there is racial stacking (which the racial imbalance for various positions on the field), the positions that require speed and greater physical athleticism are disproportionately black, and the positions that require more intelligence and leadership are disproportionately white. E.g. quarterbacks, catchers, and pitchers are disproportionately white and center fielders, defensive backs, and running backs are disproportionately black.

I had no idea that defensive lines in general were mostly black and offensive lines were mostly white. Please forgive the naive question (I really don't know much about football): Why would you suggest that is? Is being on an offensive line a higher-prestige position?

" the defensive backs for both teams were all black " and from this you draw the conclusion that there is social inequality in the united states.

i would recommened reading james agee. particularly "let us now praise famous men" there is indeed inequality in the united states. that you would attempt to promote this view by means of the racial composition of a defensive line is comical and myopic.
